Greed Corp Review PS3/XBOX360

With all the First Person Shooters I play and all the Third Person Action games I frequent, have I got time for a Turn Based Strategy Game in my life?

Well to be honest at the moment I’m struggling to find the time play any games, let alone a genre I would normally stray from, but here I am. I have been giving the task of reviewing Greed Corp, a downloadable game for the PS3. Although it is also available for XBOX360 and PC.

As I said Greed Corp is a Turn Based Strategy, which is produced by W!GAMES. Set in a fictional world inspired by the industrial revolutions and their destructive effects on the environment. Four Factions struggle for control over what remain of the planets resources, mainly by the method of sending said resources tumbling away in to the empty abyss. You take control of any of the four factions, The Empire, The Cartel, The Pirates or The Freemasons and embark on a strategic battle against 1-3 opponents, be it computer controlled A.I or a human opponent, by way of couch Co-Op or across PSN/XBL.

Fundamentally Greed CorMAPp is a Board Game using hexagonal land representing the harvestable land you are fighting for. The game has simple rules, occupy as much land as possible and basically be the last man standing. But here is where I have the biggest issue with the game though. You are introduced to the campaign by means of a tutorial, by normal definition of a tutorial you are being taught on how to play the game. Not in this case, the game just instructs you on to which moves to make to win the match while relaying the function of the given unit in a side bar on the screen. Instead they should have broken down each move by explaining what each unit is doing and why they are doing a given action. That way it would help you to understand and therefore you would learn to play strategically, rather than being thrown in to the deep end after the tutorial and fumbling your way through the first campaign level. Therefore the game takes a while to get used to and I could see how it could easily frustrate a few gamers. Once your are used to the mechanics of the game and the functions of each unit the game opens out to an extremely deep strategy game but still having a very simple rule set.

The graphics are visually stunning especially for a downloadable game along with animations that will have your eyes popping out of their sockets at every tiny detail. There weren’t any graphical bugs or glitches that I encountered and frame-rate is silky smooth. You have 2 views you can utilise, an over-head view which makes this game look like it is an actual board game, and a more dynamic, angled view that lets you see the action a lot better as well as helps you determine the strength of the land you occupy. The four factions you play are exceedingly pleasing to the eye and all are based on a unique theme. The types of units are exactly the same in function but in look they are far from similar, which makes this game so much more appealing and for a much longer time period. As well as the individual look of each faction they also have unique sound effects which further help to improve the overall quality of the game.

The multi-player is great fun and can become very addictive very quickly. There are a total of 36 maps you can play on allthough not all are unlocked at the start. I experienced no lag what so ever and joined a game very quickly and easily. I can see this as a great multi-player game with friends and I could quite easily sink in hour after hour playing this game online. I just hope the community feel the same way and are there to support it in the future.

Overall this game is a great addition to the current consoles and well worth the price of admission. With hours of game-play, stunning, a robust online structure, stunning graphics and a heap of re-playability. This is a must buy for any strategy fan and after a fair learning curve a great buy for any one else.

So going back to my question at the start. I don’t have time for a Turn Based Strategy Game in my life but after Greed Corp I’m going to make time.
