As most of you know, Sony introduced the minis line to introduce great games at a very affordable price for people to play at home and on the go. Games that are fun and addictive. Supermarket Mania feels right at home in that case as a PS3/PSP Mini. The title falls into the genre of Time Management game. These titles are primarily found on PC. It was apart of a fad in PC games a few years back and now it has made it mainstream to consoles and handhelds. Can Supermarket Mania stand up to the height set by the genre and become a hit on the consoles, or will it simply fall short.

The Story
You play Nikki who basically single handedly runs a grocery store. Throughout the story mode you are given these small comic strip cutscenes that you can use to piece together a story. It’s nothing special at all but at least it exists. The real point of the game is the fun, not the story. You Nikki through a host of levels in story mode and in Endless mode. Through the story you bounce from grocery store to grocery store on your way to becoming the best at managing a supermarket and keeping shelves stocked.

Time Management
Time management games are very addictive and this game is nothing different. You will drown hours out on PS3 and PSP as you play this fun little title. The endless mode simply has countless hours of fun. The story mode can last you anywhere between 3-5 hours which is very good for a mini. The controls are very easy to get used to on both PSP and PS3, D-pad is how you select and X is the ‘fill’ button. Certain context sensitive events use triangle but that’s really all you will need to know. On the higher levels the game can be a pain but nothing excruciating. As you go through the game you can use the money you earn to upgrade your walk speed and how much your cart can hold and other useful things to accelerate the amount of money you earn.

Mini Fun, Mini Price
If time management games are your thing and you would love to play them on the go on your PSP or PS3 than Supermarket Mania is the game for you. At the extremely affordable price of $4.99 USD, it is worth every penny. It’s what makes it one of the better and more attractively priced games for the amount of gameplay on the minis line of games.

Disgaea series is known for its tactical role playing genre. So, how will it fare as a graphic novel? Well, here it is Disgaea Infinite for the Playstation Portable. Does Disgaea Infinite give the Disgaea series a whole new direction or is it going down a path of prinnies unpaid salaries.

STORY:

Disgaea Infinite takes place during Disgaea: Hour of Darkness timeline. It follows the role of a Prinny who has to find out who attempted to assassinate overlord Laharl and stop Laharl’s really bad punishment of taking away the Prinnies salary. Prinny is pretty much screwed but, soon finds a magic clock called Tick Tock that will help him during his quest to stop the assassination of Laharl and the punishment of losing their salaries. The story will have players playing for about 6 hours with 14 endings in total.

GAMEPLAY:

Disgaea Infinite does not follow other Disgaea games. Disgaea Infinite gameplay is to find clues on who is trying to assassinate Laharl. This is when the magic clock “Tick Tock” comes into play. This magic clock allows Prinny to possess other characters and go back in time, in order to solve the mystery. The player can alter history and events, with different dialogue and events taking place. The player will also have the Time Table to use in which, the Time Table is used for going back and forth into time and redo different events, change history, find different clues, and more. Overall, that’s pretty much the gameplay of Disgaea Infinite.

GRAPHICS:

Disgaea Infinite uses the same old anime type 2D model during a lot of the cut-scenes. This is good and shows that the art style of Disgaea Infinite will not die anytime soon. Overall, it is a graphic novel and most of the game is in type of art style. There will be is some cases using 3D sprites.

CLOSING NOTE:

Disgaea Infinite is not much of a game itself but, it does fair in the fan service. This game/graphic novel is for the fans of the Disgaea series. If you new to it or don’t like games that don’t have much gamplay in it than this is not the game for you. Overall, Disgaea Infinite is a great fan service game, with a descent story set in the Disgaea: Hour of Darkness story arc, great art style, and descent gameplay. Disgaea Infinite might have some life in it after all.

Metal Gear Solid is back and ready for deployment on the PSP in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Big Boss is back to take on threats that can destroy the world and destroy robot/AI before they kill and harm the world. Should you really pass up Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker or should you buy Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

STORY:

Like every Metal Gear that has come out, it’s all been about war, nukes, and nation relationships with each other. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is not different from any other Metal Gear or Metal Gear Solid game. MGS: Peace Walker takes place after MGS: Portable ops and still set in the cold war era. This time around Big Boss (Naked Snake) has started up his own mercenary group called Militaires Sans Frontieres (Soldiers without Borders) and with the help of Kaz Miller and many others, this mercenary group fights in war-torn areas around the world.

One day, Big Boss meets his new clients in war-torn Costa Rica. Paz Ortega Andrade and Ramon Galvez Mena who wants war to stop in Costa Rica and bring peace to the land. So, Big Boss and his military group are ready for battle and bring peace to the land. This story does get deeper as you play thought but, not giving any spoilers here.

The story within MGS: Peace Walker is done really well and the story cut-scenes are seen by hand-drawn art. (In which was used in MGS: Portable ops) The story does start of slow but, picks up pace early in the game but, from that the enemies are not really a threat. Some of the main enemies who want to destroy the world are not really appealing as before enemies from other Metal Gear games. Other then that, the story fits in well within the MGS world and does make you think at times. Another great thing about this game is that the voice acting is top-notch with a lot of the returning cast and new additions. MGS is known for its great voice acting and MGS: Peace Walker show that from the cut-scenes and briefing files. The briefing files are long files that are played on the walkman and have everyone speaking from mission to mission about the mission, area of the location, making animal sounds, and more. During some cut-scenes, there are quick time events with full-on button mashing and some you can even control. The story does take about 8-12 hours to complete without any help from other players. Overall, the story is great and well told, love the hand drawn cut-scene, and voice acting.

GAMEPLAY:

MGS: Peace Walker supports a lot of new and old features that come from other Metal Gear games. Some of these new features come in the form of “Mother Base”, development, Outer Ops, Extra Ops, new way to extract prisoners and enemies, different controls and more. Some old features come in the form of camouflage (Used in MGS: Snake Eater), Versus Ops, controls, capture enemies and prisoners, and more.

Let’s look into the new feature of MGS: Peace Walker. Mother Base will be your base of operations which you’re captured and extract enemies/prisoners will go, develop new technology, build your very own Metal Gear, Outer Ops, and manage your base.

If you played MGS: Portable Ops, you can extract enemies to join you team. This time you do the same thing but, in a different way. You will be using a “Fulton Recovery system” which sends your prisoner or enemy that you held up, knock out, or near death, straight into the sky. This helps in a lot of ways in which you don’t have to drag their body back to a track and this doesn’t deter from your main objective and the heavy task of going back and forth.

After you captured or saved any enemies or prisoners, they go to your base and join your team or they might be still hostile and be put into the brig. When they do join your team, you can put them into teams ranging from Combat Unit (Which are your fighters), R&D Team (This help develop weapons and upgrades), Mess Hall Team (Which cooks and boost the morale of your base), Medical Team (Which heal your team if injured or sick) and the Intel Team. (This team searches any area in the game for important details) Each person also has status that tells you their abilities, what team they are good in, and health and stamina.

Another new feature is developing weapons and gadgets with your R&D Team. Without an R&D Team you can’t really make anything. To develop things you must spend GMP which is a type of currency which is given from the combat unit. The R&D just develops the weapons and gadgets and what level your R&D Team is base on what you can develop and how fast they make it. Another is the food gauge in which the more cooks you have, the more supplies you will have in which helps in the long run and boost your overall base morale.

Other cool thing your mother base can do is when you have the ability to make your very own metal gear. Building your own metal gear is very simple and not complex at all in which you fight AI to get AI chip boards and the more you have, the easier a part will be developed. Other than that you can change the color of your metal gear, the parts, voice, and look at its status.

This new feature is pretty unique, in which you send troops over to other areas around the world and play a little mini conquer game called Outer Ops. You can send your troops ranging from your combat units, mechs, and even your metal gear into battle. You then assign them to different teams and battle on a turn based mission. You have no control over this which does sucks but, it’s how you prepare for the mission ahead. If you win the battle you may find more soldiers to recruit, new items and more. If you lose then you might lost your mechs and your team. (Dead or wounded)

MGS: Peace Walker is very much heavy on the cooperative play this time around. You can do the main missions and extra ops missions in two player coop or play a boss battle in which, you and 3 buddies try to take on the many bosses within Peace Walker. There are over 100+ missions, which vary from item capture, extraction, bosses, and dates. There are a lot of missions which adds tons of replay value and more.

MGS: Peace Walker houses a lot of old feature like the camo index from MGS: Snake Eater. You can pick your camouflage ranging from Naked Snake, Jungle Fatigues, Stealth suit, Battle Dress, and each with their own positives and negatives. Versus ops make a comeback from MGS: Portable ops in which is pretty much of a same multiplayer madness. The game modes come in the form of deathmatch, team deathmatch, and base capture. The multiplayer is descent but, easily forgettable.

Finally, are the controls of MGS: Peace Walker. The controls of Peace Walker are both good and bad. The bad is that they are somewhat hard to control at times, but it does get the job done. There are three control setting ranging from the default controls (highly recommended), MGS4 shooter controls and the hunter controls. There are a lot of things that were taken out from the controls like moving in prone, moving on the wall, dragging bodies, first person view(with non-scoped weapons) and more. This is good and bad but, understand the controls were made simple and easy for the game so it doesn’t have to be over complex.

CLOSING NOTE:

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker is a buy for any PSP owner and for any fan of the series. It has a great story which fills in a lot of the holes in the storyline, great music and voice acting, along with descent controls, tons of replay value, and co-op. This is a MGS game that people will love and respect.

PSP games are either a hit or a miss for most of us Sony fan-boys, and yes I admit I am a Sony fan-boy. The PSP has a vast array of great games, but also a vast array of the bad. So when Square-Enix announced a couple of years ago that the next Kingdom Hearts game was coming out for the PSP I immediately thought it was going to be a bad game. Which was fool hearty of me at the time to already make this kind of judgment for a game that I haven’t even played. What made my attitude towards this game even worse was that I had this mentality going into E3. As I went into the Square-Enix booth to go look at Deus-Ex I walked by Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and the adhd child that fell in love with Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 started to talking to me saying, ” Hey you hypocritical Journalist, didn’t you just say you hate people who judge games without playing them!? Go over there and try it out.” Painfully I did. The game already looked ridiculous and I couldn’t stop thinking how dissapointed I was with Square-Enix. This feeling left as soon as I unpaused my screen and started playing my game. My main protagonist of the game was surfing on a massive keyblade through subspace as i entered to fight off a hundred or so heartless. Immediately I said to myself, ” I was wrong.” This game was the most fun I had with a PSP game since Final Fantasy Dissidia.

Vetus, Terra, and Aqua

I was traveling to a section in the game called “Deep Space” as I watched my main character, Ventus, surf on her space-traveling keyblade. It took me awhile to figure out what Disney movie took place in space. Then I got there I was welcomed by an all to familiar Disney face, the adorable, but also quite lethal, Stitch from Lilo and Stitch.

He's so cute, but at the same time so deadly!

As I entered the level he was being held captive by what seemed to be heartless like creatures that took over the ship. So we teamed up. Then the unlikely pair discovers that they have mutual friends in Terra and Aqua (two other new main characters you play as in Birth by Sleep), so Ventus attempts to fight through the enemy hordes of heartless in an effort to escape the hostage ship.

An example of the "Deep Space" level from last years TGS

Players attack with the X button, jump with the circle button, and dodge with the square button. With the dodge button the definitely improved the animation its no longer a roll but more of a charge and attack as you dodge kinda move. Of course you will have your menu on the lower right end of the screen that you will be able to select from a variety of awesome spells. When you scroll to select a spell using the D-pad you then hit the triangle button to unleash the spell out on your enemies.

After a few battles with what are apparently called the Unversed, I saw that the Attack command is replaced by a “Finish” move when an enemy is weakened, which to me is a rip-off Mortal Kombat’s “Finish him” but its still awesome to watch the unforgiving combos unleashed on the heartless. It made Ventus seem like a total badass.

To my surprise Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep was a fantastic game! My unexplained feeling of disappointment was replaced with a feeling of eager anticipation for this game after playing the demo. New characters, Keyblade surfing, familiar but also new Disney faces, and a awesome combat system make Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep a must buy for me.

The press conferences are over and I thought instead of telling you about the stuff you’ve already seen I would give a rundown of what I thought to be the best and worst of the Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo media briefings. So without further let’s take a look.

Microsoft:

The new Xbox 360 reveal hands down, no offense to all the developers who have put effort into the new games shown but the reveal of the Xbox meant no more nights of having the sound of a chainsaw whenever you want to play a game, plus I quite like the design, very slick. Oh you have to love the reaction of the crowd; Mattrick even got a second round of applause. Well played Microsoft.

Oh it’s somewhat shameless I know but the particular screen I have captured here is what I am most looking forward to playing in Your Shape, basically you have to punch and kick through blocks earning points displayed on the right hand side, pretty neat idea considering you won’t have to hold a controller.

Velveteen has been busy with work you know. If you saw the press conference you’ll get what I mean with this one, it was quite painful to watch, just think Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer knocked down a notch or two.

Look at that water!

Nintendo:

Fan service up the arse, Nintendo had by far the best press conference in my opinion and rightfully so, just look at those titles up there, well maybe except Mario Sports Mix, they could bumped up Kingdom Hearts 3D* there. But wow, Donkey Kong Country?! Kirby Epic Yarn? I was certainly impressed here, they’ve even gone to the extent of showing a new Kid Icarus and Golden Sun. That’s dedication right there. *Thanks Vinnie for the correction, silly me!

Iwata officially showing the Nintendo 3DS, that’s pretty awesome. This is one of those times where I get really annoyed that I can’t be there at E3, after the press conference demo booths for the new Legend of Zelda came up just in front of the stage and a bunch ladies showcasing the Nintendo 3DS went out to let the crowd play, I’m gutted!

Miyamoto’s demo of Skyward Sword didn’t go too well on stage due to the excess amount of wireless interference, which really sucks for two reasons, I wanted to see the game in action properly and the amount of effort and passion Miyamoto clearly puts into his games shouldn’t be met with mishaps like this on stage. It was the worst part of the show and for the wrong reason.

He did, he really did. OK this is minor but there really isn’t much I can pick out, this was one of the best media briefings I have seen in recent memory. It wasn’t as insane as Ubisoft’s granted, but it was still very awesome.

Sony:

Yeah! Kevin Butler coming onto stage made me a smile; he basically did a five minute stand up slagging off Microsoft, Nintendo and fanboyism whilst making an epic speech about gamers being gamers, slightly strange but props to Butler, he certainly does live well.

Oh it was between this and Killzone 3 in 3D, or Killzone 3D, or Killzon3D, but I have to give it to Gabe Newell coming on stage, he was nervous and I can’t fault him, you could almost cut the tension with a knife, if you don’t know, Gabe made some particularly nasty comments about the Playstation 3 sometime last year, anyway, Portal 2 is coming to the Playstation 3 supporting Steam Cloud and is supposedly the best console version!

Yeah Sony we get it you are successful and you sold an extra 20,000,000 PS2’s last year, we get that your profit for this fiscal year has risen by an extra 3%, we get that 50 million people have registered an account on PSN, well I have 3 just so I can access the US and Japanese marketplace, you ever take that into consideration? No of course you don’t. I may be being a bit too harsh here but I seriously don’t think a lot of people want to hear this.

Here’s how a majority of the Sony conference went at one point. “So we are really excited to announce some PSP games coming out this holiday” Roll trailer. “And here are the PS3 games that will be available to you this holiday season” Roll trailer. Gets a little tiresome, just saying, plus a lot of these games are actually out.

Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. released today more images from its forthcoming Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, scheduled for release on the Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, WiiTM and Windows PC this fall.

Total freedom of play is the buzz-word for Pro Evolution Soccer 2011. The PES team is currently implementing a raft of new additions, including a new power gauge-based passing and shooting system, where the user is given total control over the pace and weighting of every pass, flick-on and shot.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 aesthetics are also undergoing a revolution, with the photo-realistic visuals married to all-new animations.
